DSTopian Future

It looks like Facebook is testing a new feature that uses collected data about social patterns, along with the latest predictive thought algorithms from the Facebook Data research team, to provide comments from the future. Or it could be a weird bug in the timezone software related to the recent DST switch.

Concerned about their privacy, many users have taken to starting protest groups, in which the user threatens to quit the service, as long as 1,000,000 people join their cause. The uproar has caused Facebook to issue a statement, which urged Facebook users not to worry, since Facebook’s privacy policy has included language on thought reading for months, and there have been no issues. And that this future comments thing is probably just a timezone bug.

I got to try out the feature last night, though it really just looks like a DST bug.

Kidding aside (that’s a real screengrab), Facebook’s has impressive timestamping code, that given a date in the future, produced a “tomorrow” datestamp, rather than “error” or an absolute date.

But if it is a future comments feature, I’m for it. For example, friends may leave you a comment, warning, No, don’t go out with that person, timestamped a little less than month from now, or an ER nurse can FutureComment, “look BOTH ways before crossing”, timestamped next Thursday. Like News Feed, users would grow to accept this clearly useful function.
